Taking a stand for the healthy employee
Imagine having the ability to be healthy as you work. Not before, not after, but during your long days at the office. It seems nearly impossible, right? Wrong. In recent years, studies have shown that there is a new way forward in the health of company employees, which can all be traced back to the introduction of the Sit-to-Stand Desk.
In the modern workplace, it is not uncommon for full time employees to work between 40 to 60 hours per week, sometimes even more. In working that much, it results in a dramatic amount of time inactive and stationary, a common precursor to both physical and mental health issues down the line. In order to combat such issues, the Sit-to-Stand desk was brought into the workplace in the early 2000’s after researchers began to investigate the dangerous levels of inactivity in the modern work place.
The benefits of such design work have been remarkable, offering advantages such as Improvement of mood & productivity, Lowering of blood levels, Reduction of back pain, & even limiting the risk of developing a variety of heart diseases. With all of this information, it is easy to assume that the idea requires more sitting than standing during a standard work day, however, this is not the case.
Scientists have proven that in order to reap the benefits of a more active work life, you are only required to stand for 10-15 minutes every hour, which when you do the maths, equals just under 2 hours of standing in an average 8 hour work day. When you think about it, 2 hours per day is a small price to pay for the possibility of a happier, healthier, longer life.
Traditionally, sit-to-stand work stations have been labelled bland and unimaginative, as with most new designs, generic products are mass produced in order to expand their presence in their field of choice. However, over recent times this has not been the case. Aiming to compliment a variety of different work spaces, Howgroup has manufactured and distributed a variety of different options with a variety of different finishes.
It is encouraging to see so many workplaces now emphasise the importance of activity in the workplace, and encourage better physical and mental health for their employees. With products such as the Sit-to-Stand desk, workplaces globally will prosper from such simple yet important design in the shape of the Sit-to-Stand.
